I woke in suffocating darkness, and it took me a minute to remember where I was. Sitting up, I discovered that the tug I’d felt before falling asleep had tightened like a vise around my chest. My hands clawed at my skin as if I could free myself. After a moment, the chain loosened slightly and I took a deep breath. The candles had burned out, so it took a moment for my eyes to adjust to my surroundings.

Moonlight poured through the window, and I slipped from bed, drawn to it. As soon as my feet hit the floor, a tug redirected my attention, pulling me toward the door.

Jacqueline was right. Julian had come, and apparently, he wasn’t going to let me sleep. I grumbled under my breath about overprotective vampires as I searched for my abandoned shoes. After I felt two more tugs, I finally gave up.

The palazzo was quiet as I tiptoed into the corridor. The door next to mine was ajar and I peeked in to find the bed empty but rumpled. Jacqueline was up, probably seeing to Julian’s arrival. Since I hadn’t gotten the tour, I had no idea where to go. Turning, I started in the opposite direction only to find the tightness in my chest lessening.

Interesting.

Spinning back around, I took a step and felt it squeeze around me. I followed the sensation until it loosened again. As soon as I changed my path, it tightened again. It felt like the equivalent of a magical booty call. Not that I was going to let Julian down my pants that easily.

When I stepped into the entry, there was a strong pull toward the garden doors.

“Got it,” I said, feeling silly for talking to myself. A single candle remained lit on a table a few feet from the doors, and I picked it up. Holding it in front of me, I went to the doors, expecting to see Jacqueline and Julian arguing in the moonlight. But the garden was empty. I started to turn away when a magnetic force yanked me back toward the door.

The ground was cold under my bare feet as I stepped into the garden. I held the candle up to look around, and instantly, a draft of wind snuffed it.

Crap on a cracker. I was not about to wander around a pitch-black garden looking for anyone, even my mate. He could come and find me inside, under the covers, if he wanted me.

My fingers turned the handle to go back into the house, but as soon as the door opened a crack, another gust slammed it shut. Awareness crept like a spider up the back of my neck, and I turned slowly to find I was no longer alone in the garden.

Although, we’d met only once before, I recognized him even in the dark. Inside me, magic flamed to life, and I cried out as it burned so hot I thought I might spontaneously combust. I opened my mouth to beg him to stop doing whatever he was doing, but my eyes snagged on a limp body he held by the neck.
